Storing long materials like lumber, pipes, or metal rods effectively depends on your available floor space and how frequently you need to access specific pieces. You can utilize both vertical and horizontal methods, often even combining them in the same facility.
Horizontal storage is the standard for heavy, bulky, or very long materials. It provides the best support to prevent warping.
The gold standard for horizontal storage. It uses "arms" extending from a central spine, leaving the front open so you can slide long items in and out without vertical posts getting in the way.
Pigeon-Hole Racks is ideal for smaller-diameter items like PVC, conduit, or dowels. Materials are slid into "cubbies" or tubes. This protects them well but requires more space in front of the rack to pull the material all the way out.
Wall-Mounted Brackets are great for smaller shops. You can install heavy-duty brackets directly into wall studs to keep materials off the floor and utilize unused wall space.
Vertical Storage
Vertical storage is best for saving floor space and for shorter "long" items.
These racks allow materials to stand on their end, leaning slightly back against a support beam. Divider arms keep different types of stock separated and organized.
A-Frame Racks are double-sided rack where materials lean against a central "A" structure. This is highly efficient for high-traffic areas where you need to grab pieces from both sides.
