Project overview
We are seeking a contract Industrial Ventilation & Dust Collection Project Engineer Specialist to analyze, optimize, and standardize the ventilation and dust collection systems in our carbon fiber cutting and machining operation. The facility is already running; your mission is to streamline airflow, improve capture efficiency, and ensure a safer, cleaner environment without disrupting production.
Scope of work (project-based)
-Audit current ventilation, local exhaust, and dust collection systems including- ducting, fans, and collectors around all carbon fiber cutting/machining tools.
-Review current performance (airflow/CFM, static pressure, capture efficiency, dust accumulation points, maintenance history).
-Develop a practical optimization plan: ductwork changes, hood redesigns, fan sizing/balancing, filter strategy, and operating procedures.
-Implement agreed modifications in phases to minimize downtime (coordinate with internal team and any external trades as needed).
-Establish standard operating procedures (SOPs) for daily/weekly checks, cleaning, and filter change intervals.
-Train operators and maintenance staff on best practices for dust control, safe system operation, and basic troubleshooting.
-Deliver final documentation: updated layouts, system specs, maintenance schedule, and a short report summarizing improvements and future recommendations on possible larger buildouts.
Contract terms
-Engagement type: Short-term project engagement.
-Estimated duration: TBD based on scope of work agreed upon
-On-site expectation: Primarily on-site during audit and implementation phases
-Compensation: Hourly or project-based fee, commensurate with experience and scope
Required background
-5+ years experience with industrial ventilation, local exhaust ventilation (LEV), and dust collection systems in manufacturing or fabrication environments.
-Proven track record leading similar optimization projects (audits, redesigns, and implementation) rather than only routine maintenance.
-Strong understanding of airflow design, duct sizing, hood design, and performance measurement (CFM, static pressure, capture efficiency).
-Hands-on familiarity with mechanical systems: fans, dust collectors, filters, dampers, and related controls.
-Experience working in environments with fine or composite dust (carbon fiber, fiberglass, metal, or woodworking) is strongly preferred.
-Ability to deliver clear documentation and communicate recommendations to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Ideal contractor profile
-Independent consultant, small firm engineer, or senior technician who specializes in industrial ventilation/dust collection projects.
-Comfortable scoping work, presenting options at different budget levels, and balancing safety/performance with operational realities.
-Capable of taking ownership from assessment through implementation and handoff to the in‑house team.
